Last Friday, July 5th, a group of friends and I attended First Friday in Boston's SoWa district. First Friday is an event where the galleries at 450 Harrison Avenue in Boston open their studio doors to the public for an evening of culture and inspiration. Typically, these open receptions will present the new exhibits in the participating galleries. It is a great event, along with the many other art events and activities hosted by the SoWa organization. For more information and calendar events check out these links.
SoWa stands for "South of Washington," which is an area in the city where there is a high volume of galleries and artist studios. A few of the galleries that I always like to check out include Carroll and Son's, Howard Yezerski Gallery and Chase Young Gallery.
As it was a holiday weekend in the summer, it was not as busy with foot traffic as it usually is, and many of the galleries presented group shows. Typically, as the city becomes more populated in the fall and throughout the winter and spring months, the event it much busier and hosts more solo shows. It was nice to see the more laid back atmosphere of the event in the summer, though the busier events are also a great time. If you have happen to be in Boston on the First Friday of the month try and swing by the SoWa area.
